What is ERW Steel Tube?

An electric resistance welded tube is commonly referred to as an ERW tube. This type of steel tube is made from rolling coil (or strip) that is then welded longitudinally across its length. During this process, the tube's steel edges are melted to form a consistent cylindrical shape. The combination of heat and pressure joins the steel sheet, resulting in a very lightweight tube.

ERW Manufacturing Process

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) tubes are precision-engineered by passing an electric current through steel to generate heat, which fuses the edges to create a strong, continuous welded seam. The following outlines the ERW tube manufacturing process:

  1. Steel Coil Selection

The process begins with carefully selecting premium-grade steel coils, typically carbon steel, chosen for their strength and consistency. Each coil is specified to meet the exact requirements of the intended application, ensuring the finished ERW tubes deliver optimal performance and durability.

  2. Uncoiling and Straightening

The selected steel coil is uncoiled precisely, and the edges are straightened to ensure uniformity. This preparation stage is critical, allowing the material to feed smoothly and consistently into the forming line for the next phase of production.

  3. Skelp Formation

The flattened steel strip, referred to as skelp, is expertly guided through a series of precision forming rolls. These rolls gradually shape the skelp into a cylindrical profile, carefully aligning the edges in preparation for the welding process. This controlled forming ensures consistency, accuracy, and structural integrity in every tube.

  4. High-Frequency Induction Welding

At this critical stage, the tube takes its final form. High-frequency induction welding is used to heat the edges of the formed skelp using an electric current. Without the need for filler materials, the heated edges are forged together under pressure, creating a strong, consistent weld seam. This process ensures exceptional durability and a clean, near-seamless finish.

  5. Weld Bead Removal

Following the welding process, any excess material along the inner and outer weld seam, known as the weld bead, is precisely removed. This refinement enhances the tube’s surface finish, ensuring a smooth, uniform profile. The result is a cleaner appearance and improved functionality, meeting the exacting standards required for high-performance applications.

  6. Sizing and Shaping

The welded tube is guided through a precision sizing mill, where a series of rolls bring it to its exact final dimensions. At this stage, the tube can be formed into round, square, or rectangular profiles, tailored to meet specific application requirements. This controlled process guarantees dimensional accuracy and consistent shape across the entire production run.

  7. Cooling and Cutting

Following the sizing stage, the tube is rapidly cooled using either water or air to lock in the required mechanical properties. This controlled cooling process ensures the finished ERW tube achieves the desired strength and hardness. Once cooled, the tube is cut to precise lengths, ready for final inspection or further processing.

  8. End Finishing

For applications requiring tailored ends, additional processes such as beveling, threading, or grooving are carried out with precision. These finishing operations are designed to facilitate smooth installation and reliable connections, ensuring each tube is ready for its intended use straight from the production line.

  9. Inspection and Testing

At Elite Tube, quality assurance is embedded into every stage of production. Once formed, each batch of ERW tubes is subjected to a comprehensive testing regime designed to validate strength, durability, and overall integrity.

Mechanical tests evaluate the tube's performance under stress, including tensile strength, impact resistance, and expansion under pressure. Weld integrity is confirmed through flattening tests and advanced non-destructive techniques such as ultrasonic inspection, which detect internal flaws without affecting the tube’s structure.

A final visual inspection ensures that the surface quality meets our high standards, delivering a product that performs flawlessly and presents professionally.

  10. Coating and Packaging

To enhance durability and protect against corrosion, a range of protective coatings, such as zinc or epox, is applied as required. These finishes are selected based on the tube’s end-use environment, ensuring long-term performance even in demanding conditions. Once coated, the tubes are carefully bundled, securely packaged, and prepared for distribution. They are then delivered to specification, on time, and ready for application.

What is the Difference Between ERW Steel Tubes & Seamless Steel Tubes?

Seamless tubes are made from solid billets, pierced and rolled without welding, resulting in a joint-free structure ideal for high-pressure applications. ERW tubes, by contrast, are formed from flat steel strips and welded along a longitudinal seam.

While ERW tubes are not suited for extreme pressures, they offer excellent dimensional accuracy, consistent wall thickness, and a more cost-effective solution for structural and mechanical use.

Choosing Between ERW and Seamless Tubes

When deciding between ERW and seamless tubes, it's essential to consider the specific requirements of your application:

Strength and Durability: If the application demands exceptional strength and the ability to withstand high pressures, seamless tubes may be the preferred choice due to their uniform structure and lack of welded seams.

Dimensional Precision and Aesthetics: For applications where precise dimensions, consistent wall thickness, and a smooth finish are crucial, ERW tubes offer significant advantages. Their manufacturing process ensures excellent dimensional accuracy and a refined appearance.

Cost and Availability: ERW tubes are generally more cost-effective and readily available in various sizes and lengths, making them a practical choice for many structural and mechanical applications.

Both ERW and seamless tubes have unique advantages. Understanding these differences is essential to selecting the most suitable tubing for your specific needs.
